New Jersey Permit Test Facts

The New Jersey knowledge test has 50 questions, and you need 40 correct (80%) to pass. It's offered in English, American Sign Language and 12 other languages, including Spanish, Arabic, Chinese, Korean, Portuguese and Hindi, and an oral version with headphones is available if you can't read in any language. You also take a vision test.

At 17, you can get an examination permit at any MVC Licensing Center. At 16, you can get a special learner permit if you're enrolled in an approved six-hour behind-the-wheel driver training course. Study the New Jersey Driver Manual.

How many questions are on the NJ permit test?

50 questions, plus a survey question about organ donation. You need 40 correct answers (80%) to pass (see the New Jersey Driver Manual).

How old do you have to be to get a New Jersey permit?

At least 17 for an examination permit. At 16, you can get a special learner permit if you're enrolled in an approved behind-the-wheel driver training course of six full hours, with your parent's or guardian's consent.

What languages is the NJ knowledge test in?

English, American Sign Language, Arabic, Chinese, French, Japanese, Korean, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Turkish, Hindi, Albanian and Spanish. If you can't read in any language, headphones are provided for an oral test.

What happens if you fail the NJ knowledge test?

You can retest in 7 days (see the MVC's first driver license page).

Who can supervise you on a New Jersey permit?

An adult supervising driver in the front seat who is at least 21, has a valid New Jersey driver's license, and has at least three years of driving experience.

How long do you have to practice before the NJ road test?

Six months of supervised driving after you pass the knowledge test, or three months if you're over 21. If you're under 21, it must include at least 50 hours of practice driving, 10 of them in darkness, certified on MVC form BA-CSD.

How long is a New Jersey permit good for?

Once you have your permit, you have two years to pass the knowledge test, practice, pass the road test and get your probationary license. Otherwise, you must get a new permit.

What comes after the NJ road test?

A probationary driver's license. After one year of unsupervised driving, you can upgrade it to a basic license online.

Is this the same as the NJ DMV test?
