How many questions are on the Florida permit test?

The Class E Knowledge Exam has 50 multiple-choice questions about traffic laws, safe driving practices and identifying traffic controls. You need 40 correct (80%) to pass (see FLHSMV's Class E exam page).

What language is the Florida Class E Knowledge Exam in?

The Class E Knowledge Exam is available in English only.

Can you take the Florida permit test online?

Yes, if you're under 18. Approved third-party administrators offer the exam online (sometimes called a virtual permit test), and a Parent Proctoring Form is required, notarized or signed in front of a driver license examiner. Anyone who passes through a third party can be randomly selected for a free retest at a driver license office. If you're 18 or older, you take the exam in person at a service center.

Can you take the Florida permit test at school?

Yes, at many high schools. Driver education classes in the Driver Education Licensing Assistance Program (DELAP) can give the Class E Knowledge Exam, and the teacher enters passing results into FLHSMV's records.

How old do you have to be to get a Florida learner's license?

At least 15. If you're under 18, you need a signed, notarized Parental Consent Form. You must also show proof of a Driver Education Traffic Safety (DETS) course, and pass vision and hearing tests (see FLHSMV's teen licensing page).

When can you drive with a Florida learner's license?

Only during daylight hours for the first three months, then until 10 p.m. You must always be accompanied by a licensed driver who is 21 or older.

How long do you have to hold a Florida learner's license?

At least 12 months, or until you turn 18, whichever comes first. A parent, guardian or responsible adult over 21 must certify 50 hours of driving experience, including 10 at night.

What's on the Florida driving test?

Florida's license tests have two parts: the written Class E Knowledge Exam, which the practice tests on this page cover, and the Class E Driving Skills Test. On the driving test, you'll make a three-point turn, approach a crossing, yield the right of way, park straight in, park on a hill, stop quickly, back up 50 feet without using your mirror or rear camera, obey stop signs and traffic signals, signal and turn, pass safely, stay in your lane, keep at least a four-second following distance, and keep both hands on the wheel (see FLHSMV's Class E exam and skills test page).

When can you take the Florida driving test?

You must be at least 16 and have held your learner's license for 12 months, or be 18. If you're under 18, you also need your 50 hours of driving certified. You can take it at a service center, with an approved third-party administrator, or at school through DELAP. Your vehicle needs valid registration and insurance and must pass a basic inspection, and no other passengers are allowed (see FLHSMV's teen licensing page).
