South Carolina Permit Test FAQ

How many questions are on the South Carolina permit test?

The South Carolina knowledge test has 30 questions, and you need 24 correct (80%) to pass. It covers traffic laws, road signs and driving safety rules from the South Carolina Driver's Manual.

Can you take the South Carolina permit test online?

No. You take the knowledge test in person at an SCDMV branch, or through a One-Stop Driver Training and Testing Program if you're applying for your first regular beginner's permit. SCDMV does offer an online practice exam.

How old do you have to be to get a beginner's permit in South Carolina?

At least 15. If you're under 18, an authorized adult must sign at an SCDMV branch, unless a driver training school submits it (see SCDMV's beginner's permit page).

Where do you take the SC permit test?

At any SCDMV branch. One-Stop Driver Training and Testing Programs can also test you if you're applying for your first regular beginner's permit.

What can make you fail the SCDMV knowledge test?

Leaving the test area before you finish, talking to anyone, or bringing anything that could help you answer, including notes, a phone, a laptop or a tablet. Manuals can't be used during the test.

When can you drive with a South Carolina beginner's permit?

From 6 a.m. to midnight with a licensed driver who is at least 21 and has at least one year of driving experience, in the front seat. After midnight, you must be supervised by a qualified individual listed in state law.

How long do you have to hold an SC beginner's permit?

At least 180 days if you're under 18, or at least 30 days if you're 18 or older, before you can take the road test. If it expires, you can renew a regular (Class D) beginner's permit for $2.50.

Does SCDMV have an official practice test?

Yes. SCDMV's Driver's License Practice Exam uses sample questions from the real test bank, and the questions change each time you start. The practice tests on this page add more questions, with an explanation for every answer.

How do you get an SC driver's license?

You can get a beginner's permit at 15 by passing the vision and knowledge tests. If you are 15 or 16, before your first license you must hold the permit for more than 180 days, complete driver education (8 hours in the classroom and 6 hours driving), be enrolled in school with satisfactory attendance, and log 40 hours of practice, including 10 at night. Then pass the vision and skills tests: at 15½ to 16 you get a conditional license, and at 16 a special restricted license. You earn full privileges at 17, or after holding either license for one year with no traffic offenses and no at-fault collisions. If you are 17, you hold the permit at least 180 days; at 18 or older, at least 30 days.

Is this the same as the SC DMV test?

Yes. These tests prepare you for the knowledge test given by the South Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles (SCDMV).
